5 Characteristics of Successful Entrepreneurs 2023

At the recent Entrepreneur Convention in Birmingham, we had the opportunity to develop our business skills and connect with fellow business professionals. Inspired by the insights gained, we thought we would share five essential characteristics that every aspiring entrepreneur should embrace to pave their path to success.

So, let's delve into these traits that can make a difference:

1) Clarity

It’s not a disgrace to not reach the stars, but it’s a disgrace to have
no stars to reach for…
— Benjamin E Mays

Success is not an elusive concept; it simply requires a clear vision and relentless pursuit. You can have anything you want in 5 years if….

A)    You know exactly what you want.

B)    You make systematic progress towards it EVERYDAY.

To achieve success, you first must know what it looks like. People fail in business NOT because they aim too high or too low but because they aren’t aiming for anything at all.

To set yourself on the right track, define your goals with precision. Take a moment to reflect on what you wish to achieve in one, five, and ten years. Once you have this clarity, outline the steps necessary to turn your aspirations into reality.

2) Curiosity

Knowledge is key. Just because you run a business, it doesn’t mean that you know everything there is to know within it. So be curious!

Question processes, take online courses, attend webinars, or read an informative book. There is always more to learn, and this will inevitably help your business grow.

Don’t have the spare time? Make it!

Entrepreneur Circle recommends spending 90 minutes a day on personal tasks such as development, brainstorming, research, or anything outside of your ordinary duties.

3) Drive (and Desire)

Entrepreneurship is fuelled by motivation and passion. But have you lost that original drive?

If you find yourself too comfortable or complacent, take a moment to refocus. Often, the desire to move away from something is stronger than the desire to move towards something. So, identify what aspects of your business you want to escape or improve upon and use that to drive your business to the next level.

4) Risk Taker

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, throughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!”
— Hunter S. Thompson

Successful entrepreneurs understand the significance of time and take decisive actions accordingly. They live as if each day could be their last, making bold moves without delay.

Don’t put off making decisions because you think you have all the time in the world. Make decisions as if you won’t get the chance to make them again. If you were told that you only have one year to live, you’d do it now. Don't let fear or uncertainty hold you back. Make choices decisively and embrace the possibilities before they slip away.

5) Influencer

There are many good business ideas but the entrepreneurs that become successful are the ones that can communicate well. Successful individuals know how to leverage their power of influence in various aspects of their business, including selling, marketing, and managerial roles.

The most profound observation in the field of success psychology is that the people you spend the most time with influence how you act and perform. As an entrepreneur leading a team, your actions and demeanour significantly impact their performance. Be a role model, a motivator, and a clear communicator. Set the bar high and foster an environment of collaboration and growth.

Why not you? Why not now?

So, do you have any of these characteristics?

Don’t worry, you don’t have to throw the towel in if you don’t. Instead use this advice to adapt the way you think, feel, or act within your business. Continually refine your skills and always remain open to new opportunities. Spend time working ON your business rather than IN it.
